In April 2019 I travelled to Somalia, followed by Ethiopia, followed by Somaliland. Somaliland is a breakaway region of Somalia that fought for independence in the late 1980s. Somaliland is not yet officially recognised as a country, despite the fact they have their own government, flag and currency. The ‘country’ is regarded as much more […]

Harar was the final city I visited on my trip to Ethiopia. The majority of Ethiopia is orthodox Christian, however, the walled city of Harar is predominantly Muslim and is considered the 4th holiest city in Islam. There are 82 mosques dotted around the city, and even a sign here and there listing them, so […]
Addis Ababa

I did not get much time to sketch in the capital of Ethiopia, Addis Ababa. It’s a crazy city, such a mish-mash of old and new, rich (in relative terms) and very very poor. I had good experiences and bad experiences, but I can tell you when I most needed some kind words a family […]
Cape Town

Shortly after arriving in Johannesburg I took a flight over to Cape Town. My boyfriend and I stayed in Table View, one block back from Blouberg beach. What a view and what a beach! It’s one of the top 3 kitesurfing beaches in the world and we happened to be visiting at the same as […]
Johannesburg & Pretoria

I’ve been hovering around the outskirts of Johannesburg for a fair chunk of 2019, back and forward, and have only really been into the actual city once. Below is a sketch of the famous Market Theatre in the Newtown area of Johannesburg city. The Market Theatre opened on 21 June 1976. In time the theatre […]
Valletta, Mdina and Gozo

Just after Christmas, I had the good fortune to fly to Malta for a week and bring in 2019 in style. My friend and I stayed at a hotel not far from St George’s Bay, certainly fancier accommodation than I am used to. Lucky for me my friend is a regular patron of the hotel […]

In November I braved the Ryanair flight from London Stanstead over to Kerry in Ireland to see one of my very dear friends. I had previously visited her when she lived in Cork, but this was my first time to Co. Kerry. I love Ireland so much, and Irish people are just so wonderful, colourful […]
The Royal Oak – Vauxhall

This is The Royal Oak not far from Vauxhall station in London. It’s such a beautifully traditional pub nestled between city blocks that have sprung up around it. I have always wanted to draw this pub. I chose a slightly different medium than my usual watercolours and decided to use Promarkers.

On Thursday 4th October my band Sümer played a show at the Camden Underworld in London, supporting an amazing French band called Lazuli. We had to leave straight away to get home around midnight and in time to have a little bit of sleep before waking up at 3:45am to pack the van and set […]

The Shoreditch Sketcher a.k.a Phil Dean held a sketching workshop in September, I couldn’t resist in attending as I am a big fan of his illustration style. I rocked up to Black and White, 74 Rivington Street, Shoreditch on a chilly September Saturday morning, praying the rain would hold off as obviously this was to […]
